Rampion Offshore Wind Delivering masterclasses in physics

Students learn from teachers every day but having classes taught by professionals working in engineering and other science-related fields adds another dimension and real-life element to the learning experience.

It was with this thinking that Rampion prepared and delivered a series of five hour-long Physics Masterclasses to a total of around 50 GCSE and A-Level students at the Newhaven UTC.

Delivered by Mike Edwards, Rampion’s Senior Engineer and Xiaojing Li, Industrial Placement Operations and Maintenance, the classes covered included theory and practical work on how wind turbines work, power curves, the impact of turbine design on electricity output, cable design and operation plus power in a three-phase circuit.

GCSE students were presented with information about the energy mix and how the national grid works, while A-Level students were tested on their knowledge about circular motion and transformer ratios.

Mike Edwards said that the masterclasses were designed to be suitable for students taking STEM subjects but were specifically given during the physics lesson to encourage students to think about the role physics plays in the generation of electricity by offshore wind turbines.
