Local schools visit Rampion again as part of Open Doors
Rampion’s Newhaven Operations & Maintenance base opened its doors to more than 80 students and their teachers as part of the East Sussex County Council’s Open Doors initiative, designed to enable young people to experience the world of work first hand.
During November 2018 students from Peacehaven Community School, Ratton School, Saxon Mount and King’s Academy Ringmer visited the site and were welcomed with presentations from team members.
Students were introduced to the Rampion story, watching a video on the construction process, and then learning how wind turbines work.
They then toured the site to see some of the wind farm’s day-to-day activity including what happens in the marine coordination control room, and an on-board inspection of a crew transfer vessel. They were given demonstrations from Rampion team members on the safety equipment wind turbine technicians use, and had the chance to try on some of the climbing harnesses and immersion suits. Students were also shown examples of the types of activities wind turbine technicians do in their everyday roles.
Finally, they had a Q&A session learning about the wider energy production industry and the National Grid.
Each student and teacher went home with an information pack and a better understanding of what it is like to work on an offshore wind farm.
